One of my favorite job seekers was thanking me for my help. He was originally skeptical of the networking plan, but part of his thanks was from my “insisting” on networking. It worked for him but only because he relaxed his skepticism, embraced the plan and acted. He followed the plan and advice and went to work. His acting led to his success. It is often easy to get involved in critiquing a method or in exploring all methods to find the “best” way. But action trumps analysis. The Microsoft model of software development is to roll out software without it being fully polished, or complete. They iterate to complete it. Life can be like that. There was only one perfect life. Ours won’t be, but when we act, we get there faster and better as we iterate. In this job seeker’s case, quick and decisive action on the prescribed method resulted in multiple job offers and accepting the job he wanted. He’ll be good—everyone loves a person who acts.
