Yesterday Brian and I went to the Kingsbridge 2nd Ward in the Bronx. It took us an hour to get there by subway from our apartment. The Bishop asked us to attend Ward Council, before church. We introduced the Ward Council to the employment website (Employment.churchofjesuschrist.org) and gave each of them our contact information. We also put our contact information on the ward bulletin board. After church we attended a Self-Reliance “team” meeting. I took treats to share in the meeting! A bishopric member, the two senior missionary sisters assigned to that ward (Sister McBride and Sister Finklea, who are Member Leader Support missionaries), and two men and two women from that ward are on the “team.” The “team” told us that there are many needs in the ward. They said that their top three issues are: 1) immigration 2) mental illness 3) lifelong poverty. The stake president and bishop would like us to travel to the Bronx once a month, on a week night, to present workshops and to work with job seekers one-on-one. We will definitely do that. We just wish that there were 10 of us to help out.
